Travel Writing and Photography Seminars At London Travel Show

The Telegraph Adventure Travel Show is a consumer travel show for people who like to travel outside the mainstream.

It takes place at Olympia on the weekend of 28-29 January and will feature a hall full of specialist companies, explorers, tour leaders and experts in small-group adventures, exclusive expeditions or epic journeys.

There are currently around 70 travel companies exhibiting this year (its third), plus a dozen or so tourist offices, and a number of travel organisations, publications and gear retailers.

There will also be a programme of talks and workshops including:

Travel Writing Seminars

For those “wanting to start a career in travel writing, make money to fund their travels, document their trips for posterity or begin a blog”. The seminars will include tips on improving writing technique for print and the web, and how to sell stories to newspapers & magazines. The speakers are:

Nick Rowlands – Nick needs no introduction to travel bloggers. He is editor of Matador Abroad lives in Egypt. He has worked as a tour leader, managing editor of a Cairo city guide, and Cairo local expert for trip-planning site NileGuide, and has written for websites including the National Geographic Intelligent Travel blog, and for print publications such as The International Observer, The Daily News Egypt and Open Skies.

Adrian Phillips – publishing director at Bradt Travel Guides and author himself of several guidebooks. He writes for national newspapers and magazines (including The Independent on Sunday, The Express and National Geographic), and has a regular travel slot on BBC Radio 5 Live. He is a member of the British Guild of Travel Writers (BGTW).

Dan Linstead – travel writer, photographer and editor of Wanderlust
Dan joined Wanderlust as editor in 2006 where he has commissioned over 400 travel features and written about sailing in Scotland, homestays in Borneo and bear watching in Transylvania – among many other subjects. Dan regularly appears on TV and radio.

Jonathan Lorie – Director of the international Travellers' Tales Festival and of Travellers' Tales agency for travel writers and photographers. He writes regularly for the Independent on Sunday and was previously he was editor of Traveller magazine.

Mike Unwin – Award-winning writer, editor and photographer who specialises in natural history and travel. His books for Bradt include Southern African Wildlife and 100 Bizarre Animals, and he is currently working on Swaziland: The Bradt Travel Guide. Mike writes for The Independent, Wanderlust and BBC Wildlife Magazine.

Travel Photography Seminars

Offering a mix of informative lectures and open panel discussion, aimed at beginners and established photographers. Tutors will include professional travel photographer Paul Harris, whose work has appeared in newspapers, magazines and galleries worldwide, as well as senior editors from Wanderlust Magazine.

FREE Talks and Theatres

A set of free talks in six dedicated travel theatres. Hear explorers, specialists and industry insiders give their advice, then quiz them afterwards. The range of talks includes:

  • The Best Adventures: Inca Trail, Kilimanjaro, walking the Amazon, Afghanistan and more
  • Overland and Expeditions: Cycling the Himalaya, how to drive around the world and overlanding advice
  • Wildlife and Photography: Fascinated by wildlife and travel photography? How to take it to the next level
  • Discover Africa: Everything you need to know on lodges, wildlife, game drives, helicopter safaris and more

Speakers include:

  • Ben Fogle – presenter of several television programmes, including Animal Park, Wild in Africa and Countryfile. His achievements including racing 160 miles across the Sahara desert in the notorious Marathon Des Sables, and crossing Antarctica in a footrace to the South Pole.
  • Nick Hewer – best known for his TV role in The Apprentice and as the new host of Countdown. He will be talking about completing the Mongol Rally, a 12,000-mile charity drive from London to Ulan Bator, which he documented for Telegraph Travel.
  • Nick Crane – best known as a presenter of the Coast series and Great British Journeys. Nick has presented more than 60 films for the BBC.
  • Monty Halls – presenter of Great Barrier Reef.
  • Charley Boorman – known for his motorcycle adventures around the world and most recently in Canada.
  • Edward Parker – who led four wounded serviceman on a 180-mile trek to the North Pole, raising £2million for armed forces charities.
  • Benedict Allen – the author and survival expert.
  • Doug Allen – the Frozen Planet cameraman.
  • James Cracknell – the Olympic rower turned adventurer,
  • Mark Cawardine – the wildlife specialist.

And some mountain guys…

  • Doug Scott – the first Briton to conquer Everest.
  • Annabelle Bond – who climbed the highest mountains on each of the world’s seven continents in under a year.
  • Rifleman Chris Parkes, who climbed Kilimanjaro last year despite losing a leg while on duty in Afghanistan.
