Las Vegas and bright lights: peas in a pod, lovers on a park bench. They're intertwined, and frankly unimaginable without the other. Flickr user jrodmanjr plays around with this association, capturing some of Las Vegas' less extraordinary lights. He juxtaposes hotel neon with car lights, all set against an evening sky.

Las Vegas is an extremely popular destination by any measure, and we'd love to feature more photos of Sin City as future Photos of the Day. So upload your Vegas shots to the Gadling Group Pool on Flickr. We pick our favorite images from the pool to be Photos of the Day.

madagascar While many people may think of DreamWorks' animal cartoon movie when they hear about Madagascar, there are many reasons the destination warrants a visit in person. The country of Madagascar is actually a large island off the eastern coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean. Because of it's unique location and climate, the area is home to an array of interesting and colorful diving opportunities.

First of all there is Nosy Tanikely Nature Reserve and National Marine Reserve, located on the very small island of Tanikely that has three very different and distinct reefs, each ranging from 5-18 feet in depth. Here you will find marine life like sea turtles and Leopard Sharks. There is also Nosy Be island, which literally means "big island". Dive sites here range from about 15 feet to 150 feet and feature myriad varieties of hard and soft corals as well as underwater animals.

The best time to visit is from the end of March up until the very end of December, as January-March is the rainy season, and February is their Hurricane season. In Madagascar, December is considered to be summer and is very hot, while June and July give the country a very warm (about 79 degrees Fahrenheit) and dry winter, making this the perfect time visibility-wise for scuba diving.

To get an idea of the scuba diving experience in Madagascar for yourself, check out the gallery below.

If you have ever been in a city building, preferably a very tall one, you might have looked out the window once. Maybe twice. Maybe more. And if the light was just right, streaming in at just the right angle, you might have caught the reflection of your own face multi-layered with the city skyline beyond. Just the right approach can yield a face-shaped skyline--a skyline image distorted by the body of the onlooker. If you have ever experienced this blissful phenomenon, then you'll like City Silhouettes. British photographer, Jasper James, has perfected his subjects' reflections on glass, against sky-reaching buildings. The images are breathtaking. View them on his website.

Southwest
Called Evolve: The New Southwest Interior, Southwest Airlines introduced a new cabin layout this week at their Dallas headquarters. Due to be rolled out fleet-wide over the next year, the plan will cut 635 pounds off each plane and add six seats per aircraft in an eco-friendly way.

Many of the new developments were fabricated using products and manufacturing processes that favor the environment and the initial environmental savings reach far into the future. Products used are significantly more durable and recyclable so less replacement and repair will be needed.

Rather than replace seats, new seating materials are fitted to the existing seat frames and traditional carpets are replaced easier-to-repair carpet tiles. Even new seat back trays are made of recyclable, durable aluminum.

Big win for passengers: New seats designs emphasize and increase personal space.

"A low profile cushion combined with fixed wing headrests are geared to position customers down and back into the seat, reducing the need to recline to begin with and provided better ergonomics,"reports NYC Aviation.

marriott edition hotelsMarriott's purchase of New York City's iconic Clock Tower building and the announcement of five new Edition hotels has reaffirmed the company's commitment to the brand, part of a long term partnership with hotelier Ian Schrager.
Marriott yesterday announced new locations in Bangkok and Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates and a hotel in Los Angeles and Gurgaon, India, HOTELS Magazine reported. At present, the hotel has a hotel in Istanbul with planned openings listed on the main Edition website in London, Miami and Mexico City.

Marriott has committed $800 million to develop the brand, which has made news of late due to the ongoing legal battle between the owner of the former Edition Honolulu, now called The Modern Honolulu.

"I'm working with what I consider to be the best operators in the business. As far as I'm concerned, all the other hotel companies are run by financial guys and marketing guys and Marriott is the only true operator and they execute superbly," Schrager, the hotelier who is also behind PUBLIC hotels, told CNBC on Thursday.

"2011 ended well. I think as we head into 2012, we see more optimism in the newspapers, which can't help but help the demand side of the equation so we feel really quite good about 2012."

U.S. Blogger Tells New Zealand They Are An Expensive Destination

Wellington fruit & veg market, New Zealand
Radio New Zealand has picked up on comments published last week by an American blogger writing for the Smithsonian Magazine.

The theme of Alastair Bland’s article in the Smithsonian blog is actually ‘destinations that will break the bank’, so Japan, Russia and Scandinavia also come in for a drubbing, but the New Zealanders have picked up on their inclusion in the list.

Radio New Zealand decided to investigate further and visited a hostel in Wellington to ask a few travellers from other countries what they thought…

Toby Manhire writing for The Listener magazine picked up on the radio report, saying:

New Zealand's tourism minister, a former currency trader, should have a copy of Alastair Bland's post shuffled into his lap on the flight back from Honolulu. It delivers what can only be bad news for the tourism industry: we are no longer classifiable as an affordable destination.

That comment was enough to draw links to Toby’s post from other sites like ForexNews.com & Firstpost.com.

Overall, New Zealand is seen as as extraordinary destination, so it represents good value for money, but clearly nobody likes to be told they are pricey.

Are they? What do you think?

Want to go to a Boombox Party in NYC this Saturday night? Of course you do. I do. I don't know if a last-minute flight from Austin to NYC will be worth the Boombox Party experience for me or not, but something tells me it just may be. So, suffice it to say that if you'll already be in New York this weekend because you're visiting or living there, you should embrace this new kind of impromptu party. What is a Boombox Party? It's a portable and battery-powered party, basically. Started by two guys out of Vancouver, the parties invite thousands of people to carry boomboxes around and dance. A DJ carrying an FM radio transmitter in a backpack has the boombox carriers tune into his master FM broadcast. The result is a mobile, synchronized sound system. The party can, and probably will, go anywhere and everywhere. Subways, city blocks, parks--who knows. The location for Saturday night is TBA, but it will start at 9pm. The theme is Strictly Business, meaning, of course, you must wear business attire.

Follow the party-throwers on Facebook and find out tonight where the NYC Boombox Party will be held. And if you hear the party outside your window in NYC and you're annoyed, just remember: you're in the city that never sleeps.
